March Comes in Like a Lion
March Comes In like a Lion, also known by its Japanese title Sangatsu no Raion, is a seinen manga series written and illustrated by Chica Umino. It began serialization in Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine on July 13, 2007, and its chapters have been collected into 18 tankōbon volumes as of September 2025. The narrative follows Rei Kiriyama, a 17-year-old professional shogi player who became an orphan at a young age and lives alone, struggling with anxiety and loneliness. As an introvert and child prodigy in an adult world, Rei gradually develops his interpersonal relationships, particularly with the Kawamoto family, leading to his maturation both professionally and personally. The series explores themes of drama, slice of life, coming of age, and family life. It has received multiple accolades, including the 4th Manga Taishō and 35th Kodansha Manga Award in 2011, the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2014, and the Japan Media Arts Festival Grand Prize in 2021. Adaptations include an anime television series by Shaft that first aired from October 2016 to March 2017, and a two-part live-action film released in 2017.
