Overlord is a Japanese light novel series written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by so-bin. Initially serialized online in 2010, it was acquired by Enterbrain, with its first volume published in July 2012. As of July 2022, sixteen volumes have been released. This dark fantasy isekai series centers on Momonga, a player who, upon the supposed shutdown of the DMMORPG YGGDRASIL, finds himself trapped as his skeletal Lich character, Ainz Ooal Gown, in a new reality where his guild's NPCs are fanatically devoted. The series explores action and adventure as Momonga navigates this transformed world. A manga adaptation, written by Satoshi Ōshio with art by Hugin Miyama, began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's Comp Ace in November 2014. Furthermore, Madhouse adapted the novel into an anime television series, which first aired from July to September 2015.
